If the clause is stated in the contract which you agreed to, you have to perform your obligations under the contract. If $50,000 is the amount of money equivalent to the salary that you would have earned during the required notice period under the contract, then you may indeed have to pay such an amount if you choose to terminate the contract without waiting for the notice period to end. This is because you would need to pay the other party compensation in lieu of notice.
